The Fall of St. Francis in the Church
In Chesterton, Francis goes further back talking about the pagan world that Francis kind of felt that came, that was Italy essentially before the church. And he points out that by the time that Rome was ready for Catholicism, it had absolutely hit that point where you couldn't even look up at the sky without seeing constellations that symbolized horrible stories of sin and murder. But then you have Francis coming along and he's really embracing nature and singing the song of creation because paganism has been purged and has been finally healed.
