The Dalai Lama says there are three levels of giving: beggarly, friendly and kingly. Beggarly is when you give reluctantly but it's a good way to practice being free. Kingly or Queenly gives means that you enjoy the happiness of others who receive your gifts. The villagers where he lived as a monk understood this at some times anyway; they gave him food in their village during dry season.
