Diogenes and Cynicism
Diogenes of Sinope embodied cynicism in the ancient imagination. He is indigent and has nothing, yet he is completely self-sufficient. His wisdom consists precisely in not wanting what he doesn't need. Even wealthy, powerful men could admire the cynics because they enjoyed a kind of freedom that could otherwise be achieved only through great effort.
