The Subterranean Impact of Watchmaking on the Industrial Revolution
In Adam Smith, watches are cited as a classic kind of industry of the industrial revolution period. But until recently, we haven't really known much about how much technological advance there was in watchmaking. A new paper by some colleagues in Ireland estimates that efficiency with which people could make watches probably almost doubled between 1770 and 1820.
