Amazon.com was founded in 2001 by Jeff Bezos, who went on to become one of the world's richest men. The company is now worth more than $800 billion and has a massive cloud computing business. Amazon Web Services makes up about 15% of its revenue but generates as much operating income as it does from e-commerce sales.

So, how DID an online book retailer end up building the infrastructure layer that powers the entire internet? (Or at least 39% of it, per latest market share data.)
