When i was growing up in the pre modern era, is i stood in my field of comparative literature, you weren't supposed to use translations. But there's a lot f more languages out there than those few. Like, i've never studied dutch, for example, and im going to never read any dutch literature because i haven't had time to sud dutch. And it didn't stop in shakespeare from reading virgil and homer and learning a lot from them. Or derik walcot from reading homer and virgil and dante.
