Gerasim's Death

There's a sincerity to wanting to help Ilych that Gerasim has, but somehow cuts through Ivanitich's defenses. And so he's able to let himself be to surrender in a way with Gerasim, in a way that he's not with others. So that's why I say it's a bit idealizing, but it's again, this is a process that's being described and so we can accept it as what the character could be - even if he isn't entirely that way.
