Introduction

Kevin Killeen is professor of English at the University of York. His new monograph, the unknowable and early modern thought, natural philosophy and the poetics of the ineffable has just been published by Stanford University Press. The key idea of it is that the era inherited a rich apparatus for thinking about the unknowable. It's called the apophatic being what can't be spoken of except in negative terms.
