Memetic desire is like step one of gerard's theory. Step two is that memetic desire, quite naturally, has to lead to conflict. We're imitating the desire of a model, where we're now pursuing what the model is pursuing. So if everyone's converging on desires, this must cause conflict. More people are more alike, which means increased rivalry and a greater des differentiation as well have to come from it.
