What's the Purpose of the Freedom of Information Act?

The freedom of information act is now a more than half century old law that allows anyone, anywhere in the world to petition the us. Government for documents. It's essentially just to keep a check on the federal government, on what's going on behind the scenes. Every government agency has its own foi office; you get pretty much foi everyone who works for the government.
