"I wonder sometimes it if I had not had the internet, if I ever would have even known that I was gay," she said. "Just having that virtual connection to queer culture has been so important to me because I didn't grow up in like the most rural bumfuck town." There weren't a lot of lesbians in her school and there are other places where this is more normal than New Jersey.
