Hamicala drowned while crossing a treacherous river in 228 BC. He was succeeded by his son-in-law Hasdrubel, who exterminated the tribe. The Romans began to worry again about the Carthaginian presence in Spain. They had allies on the peninsula themselves and worried about North African encroachment. But expediency of preserving peace with Carthage took precedence.
