We've Found a New and Better Form of Piety

The way, say, green politics have evolved within Europe has made them sort of rationalization for poverty. So we're closing down plants not because we can't afford to keep them running, but because we've discovered a new and better form of piety. This rationalizing mechanism is very strong. It allows you to reframe defeats as victories. There's also a whole number of other examples where it's not the case that we can't develop other countries; it's the case that interventionism is always bad.
