I hate that I constantly think about the phrase unknown unknowns because it is like a Donald Rumsfeld quote. cisgender reporters who have never really covered trans issues go into trans stories a lot where they're actually missing the entire historical context of what they're talking about. And in fact, I wouldn't expect a random person to know any of this context. But I would expect someone who's writing front page stories for the New York Times to know this because there are people in the world who know it. You're not going to get as good of coverage if you aren't tied to community.
