The Controversy of James the Brother of Jesus

In the ancient world, politics and religion were incredibly interwoven. James was accused of being a breaker of the law if he had a reputation for being this upstanding Jew who kept the law. It seems like the biggest law he would have broken to incur stoning would be something like leading Israel to worship false gods which would tie into preaching that Jesus was the resurrected Messiah.
