Nuclear Weapons Control - The Golden Standard for Verification

The Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was signed on November 18, 1981. It marked the first time that superpowers had agreed to reduce their nuclear arsenals. The United States and the Soviet Union eradicated 2,692 weapons as a direct result of the treaty. Over the next two decades, the nuclear stockpile reduced from a global peak of 70,000 weapons to just under 15,000.
