"I wanted to be an effective speaker, but I also understood at sort of a more human level, if I couldn't understand what people were saying to me, then there wasn't a lot of people who were listening to me either," she says. "So for me, it was not a question so much of do I need to try to say something as much as when I do say something, I think it's equally as important or maybe more so to understand them first."
