The Spartans and the Battle of Athens
Diadorus reports that the Thebans had reached out to the Spartans and told them that if they would come and assist them in regaining control of Boetia, they would wage war on the Athenians. Well, as you might expect, this was eagerly welcomed by the Spartans who saw it as an excellent check upon Athens' growing power. But since Athens had blocked off the Peloponnesian from marching northward, the only way they could get up to central Greece was by getting on boats and sailing across the Corinthian Gulf. And so, the Spartans were forced to sneak across the Gulf unexpectedly at night. They then marched inland with 1500 Spartan hoplites and 10
