The Relationship Between Marketing and Sales Is Changing
Technology is allowing sales organizations to do things that as recently as a decade ago would clearly have been in marketing's domain. The real issue, I think, is whether sales organizations know what they're doing when they do those marketing activities. A well run company has an interaction and creative tension between marketing and sales for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
