Research wants to figure out whether the Chinese government is picking winners with its subsidies. Making firms more productive means companies are getting better, and this leads to economic growth for countries. We find that the Chinese government isn't giving subsidies to initially more productive firms. The Chinese government is on average giving more subsidies to less productive firms.
