Nigeria is Africa's biggest economy but only became a democracy in 1999. In the last few years, other states in West Africa have suffered coups. So I think a lot of people are pinning their hopes on Nigeria to remain a bastion for democracy in West Africa. Around 87 million people were eligible to vote this election.
Excitement still surrounds the spoiler candidate Peter Obi, whose down-to-earth ways appeal to a large constituency of fed-up youths. We look at the early returns.
