A French criminologist found that the number of people who got murdered every year in all these regions of France was basically completely unchanging. He looked at crime across all of France, he had, like, all of the crime stats. And so then there was this big debate because it was like, well, how can you punish people for committing murder if they're definitely doing it under their own steam? Because otherwise, why would this sort of universal law appear? How do you take away an individual person's freedom for committing something if that pattern has to be there because of the universe?
