Tolstoy went back and forth when it came to belief. He turned away from the church and put his faith in progress or this idea of perfection. His faith in progress was significantly shaken around the same time that his brother died. And he said that his brother had lived and died without knowing the meaning of it all. Tolstoy like Turgenev formed part of the Russian intelligentsia who thought they could make society perfect.
