What Is Wrong With Self-Conscious Design?
There's a whole load of things he thinks are specific and important properties of self-conscious society. One is that not only do you not make everything yourself but the people who design things don't necessarily even make them. He also has another idea which is that if you're not just making everything for yourself that you have a new class of people who aren't just consumer producers but designers. So any innovation away from the ideal will necessarily, probabilistically, make it worse.
