David Hume and Adam smith were close friends. David hume thought there should be an established church because, as he put it, you can bribe the indolence of the clergy. His model for dealing with the danger posed by sectarian conflict was pennsylvania. And his argument is that where there is a multiplicity of religious sects, where the government does not have an established church, what you have is a competition between these religious sects That's very important for reinforcing the human capacity for self government.
