"I love that Tolkien does by splitting up this story into the multiple books is we get that sense of uncertainty. We go for an entire book, an entire book five, not knowing what's going on with Frodo and Sam wondering," he says. "We may know they're alive now, but only if we've taken careful notes... And then the time will come where we don't know because the story's overlap."
