Knighthood in the Middle Ages was flashy clothes. And people, the hawks of the Christian world were worried that their warrior class was a little too licentious. So they were wanting to create a warrior class that was focused on the life of asceticism and poverty. The rule was one that was supposed to tame and temper the more showy and bro-y aspects of knighthood into what the bro-y aspect. They were kind of bros. Not to be bros.
