The basis for this occult approach to religion is to be found in Smith's early spiritual practices. The successful diviner had to demonstrate a connection with the invisible forces that guarded the treasure, either through prayer or through some charismatic aspect of his personality. For a 12-year-old farm boy with a divining rod, the possibility of becoming something other must have been irresistible. Like a zen cone, the solution was not necessarily logical.
