The Nasal Cavity
The nasal cavity is a hollowed-out area within the skull. Neurons project from the brain through this little plate into the nasal cavity. When you bring odorants in or chemicals, they can bind lock and key mechanism to your sense of smell. The nostrils are there just to catch larger particles that probably shouldn't be entering like fingers.
