History of Ideas: Virginia Woolf

Past Present Future

CHAPTER

Christopher Hitchens' a Room of One's Own

Christopher Hitchens wrote an essay about the difference between men and women in which he argued that it was a man's job to make jokes out of everything. The essay provoked a furious backlash from many people who found his argument ridiculous, as did Woolf for whom A Room of One's Own is perhaps the greatest essay of the 20th century. I thought about this Christopher Hitchens essay when reading Virginia Woolf's A Room Of One's Own published in 1929 based on a talk she gave at two Cambridge colleges ostensibly on the subject of women and fiction.
