Prayer, fasting and alms giving are good metrics by which to sort of lump penances in. I think Father Gregory and I both explained in our own ways the sort of the prudential, prerequisites to choosing penance. So examining the intentionality and connecting penance, the things that you do or give up to who you are as a person can be a good way to structure your examination of conscience.
