The Importance of Memory
Shame is it comes from the only witness, which is our own memory. So it comes from within ourselves. And therefore, by abusing and altering one's memory in the sense of beating it with grab a stick and give it a good thrashing, right? Nietzsche is simply saying there are people who can force their memory to see that they have done something wrong. That memory is not this objective record of things that have happened to us in the past. It is affected retrospectively by information and beliefs we may have or hold in the future.
