The Importance of Immobilization for First Time Dislocated Shoulders

The British Short-apedia Association and the British elbow shoulder society have a guideline that says if your primary first time shoulder dislocated do not immobilize it after reduction. The reason we used to give external rotation wedged slings is the belief that with an anterior dislocation you place the arm into external rotation it draws back all those structures that have been damaged anteriorly. So again we found that immobilization in general probably doesn't help structures heal and it doesn't prevent reoccurrence later on down the line. It could also cause them to have a loss of proprioceptive input into the shoulder which will reduce their ability to know where their shoulder is in space.
