I think this broader concept of what is real to include complex adaptive systems gets around this false distinction between dead matter and live systems. In the sense that we attempted to think of these dynamical systems as real, I suspect that they are just models. They are not real because you cannot really make a Newtonian mechanics perfectly working from individual parts. It's only within a certain region of too many parts to count that you get something that looks a lot like Newtonian mechanics. But these systems are not real.
