In 18 88 a european adventurer thought that if he stuck his spade into the earth of alexandria, surely he would turn up something good. The egyptian officials of the day were not particularly interested in the dig sites proposed by the excitable, self made archaeologist. It also offended the religious sensibilities of the moslem authorities that the foreigner wanted to dig around the mosque of the prophet daniel. No one was going to be digging around one of the city's most sacred spaces, let alone a christian.
