The serengaty is special in part because it still retains so many species. Large bodied herbovores that are subject to bottom up regulation. In fact, most of the world had large bison and elephant populations at one time or another. But now they have been wiped out by climate change. It's a very abnormal holdover from an era when there was much less rainfall.
