The Republic is probably Plato's best known work. It stands as the great exemplar of that phase, if you like, where he develops what nowadays we usually call his theory of forms. And so in brief, those are some of the things at least which make the Republic such a striking and central piece of writing for Plato and for the Greek philosophical tradition and subsequent Western philosophical tradition.
