What Is Original Sin and Why Do We Need It?
There are important disputes about how the Bible in certain respects should be read, and we'll talk about at least one of those. But let me say one thing clearly, since I'm not sure it goes without saying, the scriptural texts that are relevant in this debate are mostly Paul's epistles. The first proposition, again, is that man is sinful, right? That's the necessary presupposition, if one is to say that human beings need justification to begin with. And for everyone that we will consider today, for Thomas, for Luther, and for Calvin, original sin has its origin in Adam's actions.
