How to Pump a Leaky Membrane
The fundamental difference between bacteria and archaea is at the level of membranes. Membranes are much more impermeable to sodium ions than they are to protons. As soon as you change the dynamic, then it does pay to make your membrane less leaky. The reason you don't see five or six separate origins is because nothing else has ever got a chance of getting there. Darwin said that life's going to eat everything else - but I think there's actually a really interesting issue here.
