Genetics
A group of scientists went to a reef in new caledonia for ten days, and they did nothing other than search for snails and ar clams. And about half of them were only represented in their sample by a single individual. If they could only find one, what could that poor animal find in the way of a mate? They would just never have a chance. It seems completely counter to what you would expect. It can't breed, basically, cause it never meets any one else.
