Piranesi is a rogue academic, but an academic nonetheless. He's always struggling to take the most generous possible interpretation. But you can tell that he's starting to lose his innocence. And it reminds me of what you get commonly in coming of age stories. Like coming of age movies, there's often a moment of of disillusionment with adults where the children realize they're not perfect. They're actually bad people.
