Many plastics can take thousands or tens of thousands of years to degrade. A big problem with plastics is that you get something that's plastic, you use it once, and you get rid of it later. The disposability became a really big issue in the 1960s. And I think we've constantly heard about over the years of like scientists figuring out what micro-organisms can devour and decompose plastics. There's some hope there.
