CHAPTER

The Parallels of Complexity Science

The sandbar is so incredible, what I first came across many years ago, was that when you come from that very Newtonian tradition of cause and effect. When we plot out the number of avalanches of a certain size on log-log paper, we get a straight line, don't we? We're back to parallels and all the stuff we talked about in Geoffrey West's episodes. Exactly. And then what I found incredible was we see these parallels in other complex systems. We see it in the number of earthquakes we have in the world. We can relate cities of acertain size versus cities of a smaller size in exactly the same way.
