The author says tragedy is currently creating a vicious cycle in his society. He argues that by making the audience feel strong emotions of pity and fear tragedy actually strengthens that part of the soul that feels pity and fear. And aristotle is thought to have an opposite view, that in making us feel those emotions intensely hetheatre, we then are purged of them.
