Like Emerson, great poets are also artists who know how to attend. One such poet, Anne Carson, is particularly gifted in the art of scene. In one of her volumes of poetry and essays called Men in the Off Hours, she writes, The way to know is not by staring hard. She goes on to say that one must reach mind empty towards that thing you should know, until you get it. Now reaching with an empty mind is simply another way to understand Campbell's notion of looking as a passive activity.
