I think there's a tendency to want to look at history and think about it in terms of agency, and who has agency and who doesn't have agency. And so because I write about poor black workers right after the Civil War, using the law in one ways that people don't expect,. One of the ways that many people come to the project is saying, wow, this is incredible that you have, like, rediscovered this agency that they have.
