The History of the Athenians

The Frawarchus, or garrison commander, was to vet incoming political participants for covert pro-Persian sympathizers. Meledus revolted too until the Athenians also drove out the Persian-backed tyrants that same year. They were returned to the League in 451 BC, but a democratic constitution and military garrison wasn't imposed on them,. However, the Melesian magistrates were forced to govern jointly with five Athenian archons.
