But when an issue becomes the most important thing and then gets elevated above the principles of our liberal democracy, that's where we run into trouble. He says 31 Berkeley faculty members who refused to sign loyalty oath in 1950 were fired because they stood up against McCarthyism. "The history books are not kind to those interactions," he adds.
