CHAPTER

Nozick's Justification for a State

Nozick writes that, out of anarchy, there arises something very much resembling a minimal state. This natural historic development, he calls an invisible hand explanation for the emergence of society of the state. A max-vaber famously defined a state as a community that has a monopoly on force in any given geographic area. Nozick's justification for a state arising is centered around risk and fear. He argues that if someone was threatening to either murder or harm someone, or take their personal belongings by force, protection agencies would have the natural right to step in without violating that individual's rights.
