The Importance of Gyroscopes
Hubble uses gyroscopes to measure how far it's turned. Gyroscopes are balls that spin really, really fast and so they're insensitive to the motion of Hubble. So if you're holding a gyoscope and you turn, the gyoscope stays pointing in its original direction. That's why Hubble has this combination of rough sensors that tell it the absolute measurements.
